What to Expect With Oakwood Clinic Osteopaths
Your first osteopathy treatment at Oakwood Clinic will normally be 45 minutes, during which your osteopath will spend time at the beginning of the session taking down key information about your health and lifestyle.
Your posture and movements will be checked, and your osteopath will do some assessment tests to gain a clear picture of the cause of your problem. This may include hands-on tests on or around painful areas to check for tense muscles or stiff joints.
Your osteopath will assess you to make a full diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your needs to help get you back to your best as quickly as possible, and will then explain the findings to help you understand your condition.
Follow-up treatments are normally 30 minutes – though some patients request treatments lengths of up to 60 minutes – and include a brief reassessment, followed by a full osteopathic treatment session.
Your osteopath may also give you stretches or exercises to continue with during the week. These are recommended for your individual needs to help you maintain the benefits of your treatment, and help you recover as quickly as possible. You are free to ask any questions about staying pain free and healthy; we are more than happy to assist our patients.
Cranial Osteopathy in Enfield, Southgate
Cranial Osteopathy can be effective for babies and children with:
- Sleep problems
- Feeding problems including poor latching on and regurgitating feed
- Respiratory problems such as cough and runny nose
- Wry neck
- Baby turns on one side all the time
- Flattened areas of the head
- Ear infections
Cranial osteopathy treatments can also help adults for a wide range of problems including:
- Long-term or chronic pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Pain which has been resistant to other treatments
- Stress relief
- Helping the body to recover from bereavement, shock or trauma
- Accidents and whiplash
Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle treatment. Using a very light touch the therapist senses areas of tension and dysfunction, and by gently holding the area the body begins to release this stored tension.
Very often the cranial osteopath will work on the head, gently cradling it to release tension. There are several bones that make up the skull, and our Oakwood cranial osteopaths are highly trained to sense when there is a lack of normal movement in the joints and in the meeting points or "sutures" of the skull.
You are likely to feel relaxed during and following a cranial osteopathy session. You may also notice an improvement in pain relief and less stress afterwards. Babies respond to the treatment very well and usually leave the clinic in a relaxed sleep.
Because of these positive effects, cranial osteopathy is very popular with parents who have babies who are struggling to sleep or are restless and colicky. Babies often need two or three treatments to settle these problems.
Cranial treatment can also help people with long-term pain and ailments and for those who have failed to respond fully to other treatments. People who have suffered accidents and whiplash often find cranial osteopathy relieves the tension in their bodies which may result in less pain.
It is also increasingly used for stress relief and re-balancing after a difficult time such as bereavement, shock or trauma.
